Energy Farm
UKRAINE
THE WORK ESTABLISHING AN ENERGY FARM CENTER IN BORSHCHIV.
UKRAINE, STARTED IN JULY 2015
The project is a response to a growing need for more “hands-on” knowledge for rational and effective use of the vast bioenergy resources in Ukraine. The absence of an infrastructure between underutilized bioenergy resources and interested users, the lack of knowledge of effective use of fallow agricultural land for energy crops, and incorrect design of heating systems are some of the big stumbling blocks in Ukraine.

The center makes use of the practical and theoretical training experience from the Energy Farm in Norway as well as Ukrainian expertise. The center is equipped with a modest range of equipment in order for participants to see and be part of the bioenergy preparation and usage processes. The center’s economic income is based on the provision of energy crop seedlings, sale of refined bioenergy pellets and the sale of heat to the local communities.

11 REASONS TO INVEST IN THE ENERGY FARM IN BORSHCHIV

-
Ukraine has vast bioenergy re sources and economic bioenergy potential is mapped to 221 TWh, which covers approximately 14 % of the total primary energy supply (TPES).

-
The theoretical potential of bioenergy in Ukraine is approximately 580 TWh, the technical potential is approximately 420 TWh.

-
Arable land is 32 million hectares in Ukraine, of which 7 million hectares are not in use. This facilitates for great growth in production of biomass for both food and energy. This should be coordinated according to EU-standards.

-
There is a growing need for more “hands-on” knowledge for rational and effective use of the bioenergy resources.

-
Local authorities in Borshchiv municipality have shown offensive interest in cooperation with the energy farm center in Borshchiv and the recent energy situation in Ukraine gives an indication in shifting energy policy on the national level. This favors increased use of local, renewable energy resources.

-
The energy farm center in Borshchiv contributes with knowledge and facilitate for entrepreneurs and other business development, and are a market- and meeting place where different actors and stakeholders can meet.

-
The energy farm in Borshchiv can cover its energy need more than 6 times using available biomass waste and by-products and at the same time get a more robust economy through providing and selling energy as power, heat and transport fuels to the local market.

-
Careful calculations show that the gross biomass potential is 675 GWh in the municipality. This can cover the use of natural gas 2,5 times without conflicts between food and fuel.

-
The municipality can be self-sufficient with biomass from own resources which contributes to lower and more stable energy prices and independence from imported fossil fuels.

-
Available resources and byproducts for production of biogas are significant. Biogas can be fed into the pipelines as a substitute for natural gas and also handle the organic waste from the municipality.

-
Byproducts and waste from the municipality can be utilized and the center can process and store biomass for the community.

AWARD WINNING BOILER
The bio boiler installed at the Energy Farm center has 80 kW capacity and is an Ukrainian product. It has received a European innovation award for the burning technique and more than satisfies EU emission requirements in densely populated areas. The boiler can utilize different kind of biomass, with water content up to 50%.
